Ask a Yemeni what time you should meet them and there's a pretty good chance they'll give you a prayer time rather than the hour of the clock. So here are the Arabic names for the prayer times which I'm sure are useful to learn if you are in a Muslim country.
- فجر Fajr - Dawn
The Fajr prayer starts with the rise of fajar sadiq (the white light) in the east until sunrise. - ظهر Thuhr - Midday
The Thuhr prayer is after midday but before the shadow of the sun becomes twice its length from midday. On Friday the Thuhr prayer is replaced by Jumu'ah, which is obligatory for all Muslim males above the age of puberty who are resident and without a legitimate excuse. - عصر Asr - Afternoon prayer
The time when the length of any object's shadow equals the length of the object itself plus the length of that object's shadow at noon. - مَغْرِب Maghrib - Sunset prayer
The word maghrib means "of the setting (sun)"; from the root "gharaba غَرَبَ ", "to set"; "to be hidden" (but it is not used for the setting of the moon). - عشاء Isha'a - Night prayer
عشاء means dinner and evening in Arabic. عشاء begins when complete darkness has arrived and the white twilight in the sky has disappeared
