Free Arabic language resources

While searching for the Saudi Arabic: Urban Hijazi Dialect course which is highly recommended on Amazon.com I discovered this book and the tapes are legally and freely available for download at http://fsi-language-courses.com/Arabic.aspx

The reason being:

This site is dedicated to making these language courses freely available in an electronic format. This site is not affiliated in any way with any government entity; it is an independent, non-profit effort to foster the learning of worldwide languages. Courses here are made available through the private efforts of individuals who are donating their time and resources to provide quality materials for language learning.

The other books on the site are

  • Levantine and Egyptian Arabic Comparative Study
  • Levantine Arabic: Introduction to Pronunciation
  • From Eastern To Western Arabic
  • Classical Arabic: The Writing System

Another handy site is myhappyplanet.com where you can find a language exchange partner for Arabic. I find it really handy now that I'm no longer in regular contact with Arabic speakers to answer any questions that arise from the self study I've been doing since returning from Yemen. Also it's interesting to answer my language partner's queries about English because it reveals grammatical rules that never previously occured to me.
